The confidence switch is an excellent way of helping you at those times when you want to feel instant self confidence:

when you are feeling anxious about some upcoming event; when you are experiencing self doubt; when you are feeling as if you can’t achieve something, or do something. This is a simple technique that will enable you to generate a feeling of self confidence in yourself whenever you wish. This confidence switch is a technique known as an anchor. You can learn it and then use it when you do self hypnosis. Such techniques are more powerful when used in hypnosis or self hypnosis because they are affecting the unconscious mind – so their use then becomes multiplied when used outside trance because the unconscious mind is then delivering the effects through the conscious mind.

Read through the instructions for the confidence switch a few times before trying the technique. When you have learned the process, you can rehearse it when you are practicing self hypnosis. You can also practice physically to make it more effective. As with all techniques, you can learn them easily – but they are no use if you don’t actually use them when you need them! This anchor is a very effective confidence switch, and by learning it and using it you will be able to create instant self confidence within yourself whenever you wish.

Confidence switch:

'Remember an occasion when you felt very confident, or perhaps a time when successfully achieving something made you feel very confident. Take a few moments to remember a time when you felt very confident.

Fully return to that memory now - not as an observer, but as a participant - as if you are there now, as if it is happening to you now.

See what you saw - hear what you heard - feel how confident and how good you felt about yourself (it’s important to feel the feeling!), and as you continue to run through that memory in your mind, make the memory much clearer, by making the picture larger, the colours brighter and richer, and the sounds louder and clearer, so that you make the feelings stronger.

Then, as you feel those very strong feelings of self confidence, squeeze together the thumb and middle finger of either hand - squeeze the thumb and finger together and feel those feelings of confidence. Feel the confidence being generated within you. Then relax the hand.

Now repeat that process with the same memory. Return again to that memory of a time when you felt very confident. See what you saw - hear what you heard - feel how good and how confident you felt.

From now on, simply squeezing together that thumb and middle finger produces strong feelings of self confidence within you.'

You can use this confidence switch as a method of creating instant confidence in three ways:

  1. Use it repeatedly during the day so that you are regularly experiencing feelings of confidence;
  2. Use it ‘in the moment’ – so that if you are experiencing a feeling of lack of confidence about something specific that you are doing at the moment, then you can squeeze together your thumb and finger and allow yourself to feel confidence;
  3. As preparation for an event or for doing something. So if you know you will be doing something in the future, you can use the technique repeatedly as the time approaches, by using the process below:

Think of a situation in which you need to feel confident, or in which you would like to feel confident, or a situation in which you might normally lack confidence. Picture the scene clearly. Imagine how you would normally feel in that situation, and as you do so, squeeze together the same thumb and middle finger, and feel those feelings of self confidence and belief in yourself spreading through you. Feel instant confidence spreading through you.

Now imagine taking those confident feelings with you into that situation. Imagine everything going as you want it - see the positive outcome you wish to see. See what you’ll see - hear what you’ll hear - and imagine how good it will feel to be filled with self confidence. Now relax the hand, and allow yourself the feeling of confidence in the knowledge that just squeezing together that thumb and middle finger can create strong feelings of self confidence - whenever you wish - in whatever situation you need Whenever you need to feel confident in yourself - you can simply squeeze together that thumb and middle finger, and you feel feelings of self confidence flowing through you.

Although I recommend using the thumb and middle finger, for the confidence switch you can, of course, use whichever finger you feel most appropriate – as long as you use the same finger, and then don’t try to put another anchor into the same finger! This is a very effective technique – a confidence switch - one that I use myself, so I can confirm that it works. Learn it and use it to create instant self confidence! When you do self hypnosis, you can rehearse this technique in your mind. It is especially useful if you regularly face a situation in which you need to be confident in yourself - you can use the technique in self hypnosis to generate a confident response to the situation.
