NLP, which is expanded as Neuro-Linguistic Programming, is a behavioral technology based on the belief that by adjusting or manipulating the words we use and the meanings associated with them, we can change or adjust the way the subject views the world. The goal is to change the subject’s behavior, and hence the consequences of their behavior.
To learn NLP techniques it is important to learn hypnosis as well because NLP works best together with hypnosis. Hypnotists aim to induce a relaxed state in a subject which makes them more receptive to their words, opening up their subconscious mind. Hypnotists and Hypnotherapists use NLP to access the thought processes that remain hidden and work at changing these thought processes, so as to bring an improvement in the subject’s life.
The Science Behind Hypnosis and NLP
There is a definite science to how hypnosis works, it is not some trick or gimmick as it is made out to be by media and Hollywood. Hypnosis is a state of increased awareness. When someone is put into a hypnotic state, their unconscious mind, which is the center of all feelings, becomes receptive to the words of the hypnotist.
To understand how this works, one should appreciate how powerful the subconscious mind is. The subconscious mind stores every single experience one has gathered over a lifetime. It is like a computer which can be programmed through the force of repetition.
By altering the thoughts in the subconscious mind, it is possible to change the behavior. Hypnosis and NLP work with the subconscious mind, influencing it deeply. Together, they are quite powerful.
As you learn hypnosis and NLP, you will get to know more about why hypnotists say certain words or use a specific script, repeatedly with a subject. The goal is to give empowering suggestions that restructure the thought processes in the mind, which causes positive changes to occur in a subject.
How Hypnotists Use NLP
Hypnosis is used in an NLP technique called NLP Anchoring, which works by creating a link between a particular internal feeling of a subject with an external event, which may be a sound or a touch of the hypnotist. Hypnotists make use of a particular script during NLP Anchoring, which you may access here.
The Anchoring script uses 2 positive anchors. One anchor is based on anger and another on competence, and the technique involves hurting the sensitive skin around the thumbnail. The anchoring script brings out negative emotions, while the anchor combats the painful feelings with powerful, positive emotions. You will learn more about NLP Anchoring as you learn hypnosis, but this basic technique that involves creating an Anchor may be of interest to you.
Here’s How to Create an Anchor
First, you need to talk to the subject in a soothing tone and help them recall a feeling of “powerâ€. Ask the subject to remember a time when they felt truly powerful and in absolute control. You want them to experience that feeling once again.
Now the powerful positive feeling has to be intensified. The subject has to get completely immersed in the feeling of positivity and of being powerful. Their facial expressions and breathing patterns should change.
A positive state has been created, now it has to be anchored. Create a physical link to the feeling, such pressing the sensitive skin on top of the subject’s thumbnail with your fingernail.
Now use the NLP script to get the subject to experience the negative feelings that cause so much pain, the negative experience that they wish to forget. Assure them that they can handle the pressure.
Just when the subject is experiencing the negative feelings, fire the anchor we described in Step 3. This way you use the feelings of power and positivity to combat the feelings of negativity. This makes the negative feeling or experience lose its grip over the subject.
